7 days Kilimanjaro Climbing Machame route
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via the Machame route typically takes around 6 to 7 days. The Machame route, also known as the "Whiskey Route," is one of the most popular routes up Kilimanjaro due to its scenic beauty and relatively high success rate.
1: Moshi/Arusha to Machame Gate (1,800m/5,905ft) to Machame Camp (3,000m/9,840ft)
After breakfast, drive to the Machame Gate (about 1-2 hours) for registration. Begin the hike through the lush rainforest to Machame Camp. Trekking time: 5-7 hours.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,840m/12,600ft)
Continue ascending through the heather and moorland zone. Pass through the picturesque Shira Plateau en route to Shira Camp. Trekking time: 4-6 hours.
Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (3,950m/12,960ft) via Lava Tower (4,630m/15,190ft)
Climb to the Lava Tower for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp. The descent helps with acclimatization. Trekking time: 6-7 hours.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (3,995m/13,106ft)
Tackle the Barranco Wall, a steep scramble with some exposure. Traverse through alpine desert to Karanga Camp. Trekking time: 4-5 hours.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,600m/15,091ft)
Ascend to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit attempt. Rest and prepare for the summit push. Trekking time: 3-4 hours.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,341ft) to Mweka Camp (3,100m/10,170ft)
Start the summit attempt around midnight, reaching Stella Point at the crater rim by sunrise. Continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest. Descend further to Mweka Camp for overnight. Trekking time: 12-16 hours.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (1,640m/5,380ft)
Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Collect your summit certificates and say goodbye to your climbing team. Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Trekking time: 3-4 hours.
