6 days Kilimanjaro Climbing Machame Route
This 6-day Kilimanjaro climb via the Machame route, the itinerary needs to be adjusted to accommodate the shorter duration while still allowing for acclimatization.
Day 1: Moshi/Arusha to Machame Gate (1,800m/5,905ft) to Machame Camp (3,000m/9,840ft)
Drive from Moshi/Arusha to the Machame Gate. Begin the hike through the rainforest to Machame Camp. Trekking time: 5-7 hours.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,840m/12,600ft)
Ascend through the heather and moorland zone. Reach Shira Camp via the picturesque Shira Plateau. Trekking time: 4-6 hours.
Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (3,950m/12,960ft)
Hike through the alpine desert, passing the Lava Tower. Descend to Barranco Camp. Trekking time: 6-7 hours.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (3,995m/13,106ft)
Tackle the Barranco Wall, a steep scramble. Traverse through the alpine desert to Karanga Camp. Trekking time: 4-5 hours.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,600m/15,091ft)
Ascend to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit attempt. Rest and prepare for the summit push. Trekking time: 3-4 hours.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,341ft) to Mweka Gate (1,640m/5,380ft)
Start the summit attempt around midnight, reaching Stella Point at the crater rim by sunrise.Continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Descend back to Barafu Camp. Continue descending to Mweka Gate. Trekking time: 12-16 hours.
Note: This itinerary allows for a slightly shorter final day, combining the descent from the summit with the hike to Mweka Gate. It's important to be well-prepared physically and mentally for the summit push, as it involves a long and strenuous ascent followed by a steep descent. Additionally, climbers should be aware of the risks associated with altitude sickness and take appropriate precautions.
