Mahakumbh Mela - Prayagraj 2025
The Kumbh Mela is one of the world's largest religious gatherings, held in India, attracting millions of pilgrims, sadhus (holy men), and tourists from around the globe. This Hindu festival is celebrated in a cycle of four locations—Allahabad (Prayagraj), Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik—every 12 years at each site, with smaller gatherings called Ard Kumbh Mela occurring every six years.
Historical and Mythological Significance
Kumbh Mela's origins are rooted in Hindu mythology. According to the legend of the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), gods and demons churned the ocean to extract the nectar of immortality, or Amrit. During the process, drops of Amrit fell at the four locations where the Kumbh Mela is celebrated. The festival commemorates these sacred drops and symbolizes the victory of good over evil.
